Having dry skin on the penis can occur due to a variety of reasons and it can be treated in a variety of ways too. This is a very commonly occurring problem, though it is definitely unhealthy and needs to be treated as quickly as possible. It is also one of the easiest problems to prevent.

Since dry skin on the penis can be due to lack of hygiene as much as it can be due to a diseased condition, it is important to take this condition seriously, especially if it persists of a long time. The following is some important information about dry skin condition on the penis.

Symptoms

The dry skin on the penis will appear like dry skin on any other part of the body. It will appear as a shriveled skin structure, which will later become flaky and even start peeling off. In most cases, the dry skin appears white and is present in patches. The patches may be present anywhere on the penis but they are especially present on the lower side of the penis and near the glans (penis head).

Usually, dry skin on the penis does not itch. This is what differentiates it from STD conditions. However, it will produce discomfort to the person, especially when the person has to spend a long time in underwear or stays in tight clothing.

One more feature of the dry penis skin is that it vanishes when water is put on it and becomes quite like normal, healthy skin. But after some time, the skin patches will reappear in the same place. Hence, putting water on the dry skin is only a means of temporary relief, not a cure.

Causes

Washing the penis with hot water and soap is usually the cause. Excessive washing with soap can cause an eczema-like condition leading to dry skin. This is because soap can wash away the natural lubricants that moisten the penile skin. Also, men who keep their penis covered all the time can suffer from this condition.

On the other hand, men who keep their penis exposed to the air too much also may suffer from this condition. Hence, too much exposure or too much covering of the penis are both causes of this condition.

Men who masturbate excessively are also at risk of getting a dry skin on their penis. But this is because they expose their penis to the air too much when they are masturbating excessively and not because of any other reason.

Dry skin on the penis can also be a symptom of some kinds of sexually transmitted diseases. In such cases, there may be other symptoms such as red patches, chancres, swollen spots and even bleeding.

Prevention

Do not wash the penis excessively with soap. Use only lukewarm water and don't wash the genitals more than once a day. Be careful of the creams that you use on the penis. You might be allergic to some. Some people also have allergies to particular brands of condoms. Hence, changing your condom brand might help.

Most importantly, do not self-medicate if you get the condition. The underlying cause can be anything and so it is vital to get a proper diagnosis.
